India is famous for a lot of things such as diverse culture, thousands of languages and tasty foods. But it is also having one of the largest numbers of higher education institutes in the world.

Since there are around 500 million people in the age group of 5-24, there is an increase in the number of education providers.

Nevertheless, there are thousands of colleges and universities, we bring you the top ten universities in India. These are as per the NIRF ranking 2018 which is released by the Union Human Resource Development Ministry.

1. Indian Institute of sciences, Bengaluru

This institute offers education in Science, management, design, and engineering. It has been bagging the first rank from the last three consecutive years.

It was established in the year 1909 with the support of Jasmeet Tata and by Maharaja of Mysore. Locally it is called the Tata Institute and obtained the deemed university status in the year 1958. The college has around 3325 postgraduates and 470 staff.

2. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi

This was one of the well-known universities in India which was established in 1969. The estimated budget cost for the university is 200 crores.

It currently holds 614 academic staff, 905 undergraduates and 2,150 postgraduate staff. The university has affiliations with UGC, AIU, and NAAC.

3. Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi

Apart from one of the most important locations for Hindus, the place is also known for one of the top ten universities in India. BHU was established in the year 1916 in Banaras by Madan Mohan Malaviya.

Around 30,000 students are studying on the campus as residential which gave the name largest residential university in Asia.

It is formally called as Central Hindu University. They have affiliations with ACU, UGC, AIU, and NAAC.

4. Anna University, Chennai

It is the most famous state level university in Tamil Nadu. It was established in 1978 and have their main campus in Guindy, Chennai.

It is the young college which was established recently compared to others in the list. But mad it’s very own reputation in Chennai and the whole India.

The Anna University campus was beautifully located in 185 acres of land and has a set of colleges consists, Alagappa College of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning and another their technical departments belong to the University of Madras.

They offer engineering and technology and has a dual semester syllabus. Anna University ranks 651-700 in interanion QS world university ranking of 2018.

5. University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad

It is a public university established in 1974 in Gachibowli, Hyderabad. Around 500 students are studying in the university and it was occupying 2300 acres of land.

They are affiliated with UGC, AIU, ACU, and NAAC. Around 90% are residential students. They are offering M. A, MSc, M.BA, M.Phil., MTech, and many other well-known famous courses.

The university ranked 601-650 in the international rankings. It looks like a little private world with recreation centers, hostels, and canteens.

6. Jadavpur University, Kolkata

It was established in the year 1955 in Kolkata. It is one of the early modern Indian universities. They have a university press to publish all university-related documents and records and textbooks.

They also have a number of affiliated schools. The university has many notable alumni such as the actress Parambrata Chatterjee, Neel Mukherjee the novelist, singer Anupam Roy etc.

7. University of Delhi, Delhi

It was founded in 1922 as per the act of central legislative assembly. It has both academic departments and three affiliation colleges. It was started with 750 students when it was found and ever since flourishing further.

The University of Delhi has a total of 77 affiliated colleges and 5 institutes with 132,000 regular and 261,000 non-regular students. The university has the vice president of India serving as their chancellor.

8. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore

The college has multi-campus and academic structure. It received an ‘A’ grade by the NAAC. They have six campuses in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

They have good collaborations with US Universities such as Ivy League universities and other European universities for exchange programs.

It was established in the year 2003 and have 1750 academic and 18000 students. They hold 168th rank internationally and 801-1000 rank worldwide.

In Asia, they are 201-250 rank holders. Their medicine colleges are ranked 14th in India by Outlook India in 2017.

9. Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune

It is formerly known as University of Pune and University of Poona. It was founded in 1949 and has 43 academic departments. They have many affiliated colleges, research institutes, and departments.

The Governor of Maharashtra acts as the college chancellor. And they are affiliated to UGC. They operated the college in Nizam guest house till 1949 and shifted to the current building then.

The location of the college has some historical significance, with a connection to the Battle of Khirkee in the Anglo- Maratha war.

They have 18 affiliated colleges such as Nowrosjee Wadia college, Fergusson college, sir parashurambhau college etc. the college library holds a huge collection of 450,000 books.

10. Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh

We are now reached to the top ten universities in India. AMU was established in 1875 by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan.

The main campus is in Aligarh and there are another three campuses in Kerala, West Bengal, and Bihar. Under the seventh schedule of the constitution, it was stated as the Institute of National Importance.

Formally it is called as the Mohammed Anglo oriental college. With 2000 academic staff and 30,000 students.

In 1918 the Nizam of Hyderabad made a 5-lakh donation for the establishment of the college and the Governor-general of India Lord Northbrook donated 1000. There are many other historical people who contributed to the college.

The efforts to make it as a university started in 1900 and by 1920 it attained a central university position.
